OVERALL
5:07:38 total time, which put me at:
16/156(10.3%) Finishers in the Men’s 35-39 AG
83/1466 (5.7%) Finishers Overall

My primary goal going into Ironman 70.3 Hawaii (Honu) this year was to break 5:00 hours, and that was ultimately not in the cards. I can’t really say I am upset, as I put in a 10:00 improvement over my time last year, felt I ran as strong as I could have given the hot conditions and had an absolute blast with Sarah and the TriForce Triathlon Team. I love this race and everything about it: (i) the overall location, (ii) the fabulous course and (iii) the top-notch production Ironman puts on for this race (i.e., the great finisher’s zone and post-race BBQ). It is my favorite race to be honest – so I had a blast! In my actual race, there were some hiccups and definitely a lot of key takeaways to improve on, but all-in-all I executed on my overall race plan and ran fairly well given the heat.

This season I started working with Coach Kevin Coady from TriForce Triathlon Team, with a goal of significantly structuring my training. My “A” races this year are Ironman 70.3 Hawaii on May 30th and Ironman Boulder on August 2nd. Coach Coady suggested I sign up for an early season local race around April, and HITS Napa Valley Half Ironman fit the bill perfectly.

I finished the race in 5:09:42, which was 3rd place in my age group (3/27) and 17th overall (17/261) in the race. I was pleasantly surprised by the results given where I am at in my training for the year and the general difficulty of the course (which, as described further below, is extremely hilly). My primary goals going into the race were to focus on (i) refining my nutrition strategy by upping the calories on the bike to see if my stomach could handle it at higher intensities and (ii) work on bike pacing using a power meter, all with a view to where I stand in my fitness coming off of a “middle base” build period before I shift into a half ironman specific build for Hawaii. I also ended up with two PR legs at the half ironman distance for me – swim and run.

On July 14th, I participated in the Ironman 70.3 Vineman triathlon, which consisted of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run in Sonoma County. I participated in this race last year as well. Significantly, thanks to generous donations of my friends, I was able to raise $692 for Building Bridges Worldwide, a not-for-profit organization committed to constructing schools, orphanages, clean water wells, medical clinics, and bridges in impoverished communities around the world.

On May 31st, I participated in the Ironman 70.3 Hawaii triathlon (also known as Honu), which consisted of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run. It was an awesome course and it felt really cool to bike up the Queen Ka’ahumanu highway, essentially sharing the second half of the Ironman World Championship bike course held each October. After the weekend race, Sarah and I headed to Kauai for an awesome week long trip exploring. I am now gearing up for Ironman 70.3 Vineman in Sonoma County.

Well, race season has now officially started for me for 2014 (although training season started back in February)! I have a pretty decent schedule of events this year, with my highlights being Ironman 70.3 Hawaii on May 31st and Ironman 70.3 Vineman on July 13th. Rounding out those half-Ironman distance events, I also have the California Sprint Triathlon on June 28th, which will be my first sprint-distance and I am excited to go “all out” for a race, and the Mammoth Fall Century & Grand Fondo 102-mile bike race on September 6th. Add in a 10-day trip planned in August with Jon climbing in Bugaboo Provincial Park in British Columbia and the Big Sur Half Marathon on November 16 (which I ran last year and loved), it will be a pretty busy season. Fortunately, Sarah lets me get away with all of this stuff!

Last Sunday I participated in the Ironman 70.3 Vineman Triathlon, which consisted of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run, and was held in Sonoma County, California. This was my first half ironman distance and I had a blast! Thanks to the generous donations of friends and family I was able to raise $825 for Building Bridges Worldwide, a not-for-profit organization founded by several of my friends from college that is committed to constructing schools, orphanages, clean water wells, medical clinics, and bridges in impoverished communities both domestically and around the world.

Synopsis: After participating in the 2012 Golden Gate Triathlon (Olympic Distance) this past January and completing a century ride with my father and step-mom in October, I had one additional triathlon scheduled for 2012: the Marin County Triathlon (Olympic Distance).

The Martin County Triathlon was a great race, and very well run. The Olympic Distance involved 1.5K swim in San Pablo Bay, followed by a 22 mile bike course through China Camp State Park and finishing with a 10K run along San Pablo Bay.

Location: San Francisco, CA

Synopsis: Given the lack of snow this past winter and the generally awesome weather around the Bay Area, I decided that I wanted to start training for some triathlons this season. I bought a new road bike in January and hit to the streets – quickly realizing why the greater Bay Area is considered one of the best road biking meccas in the country. The hill climbing around the Coast mountains is incredible.

Anyway, I signed up for my first ever triathlon – the Golden Gate Triathlon (Olympic Distance) put on by Tri-Freaks. The Olympic Distance was planned to involve a 0.93 mile swim, a 25.82 mile bike and a 6.17 mile run. Because of the hilly nature of San Francisco, the bike leg involved 2,919 feet of climbing! Fortunately, my hill climbing training really paid off in the end.

Most importantly, I was able to raise $1,985 dollars for the American Cancer Society of California through generous donations from my family and friends. I really appreciate the support from everyone who donated for such a good cause!

Ultimately, I was able to place #3 overall in the race out of a total of 87 competitors in the Olympic Distance. This also included placing #1 out of 26 in the male age group of 30-39. I was very pleased with the results for my first ever triathlon and plan on continuing training this summer for the 2012 Marin County Olympic Distance Triathlon in November.
